The assassination of Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, will have a significant impact on the country’s internal political balance. This view was expressed by Iran expert Zhanna Vardanyan.
Larijani as a balancing figure
According to her, Larijani was an important actor in Iran’s political system — not only because of his position, but also due to his working style. He is described as a pragmatic and moderate figure.
He was able to effectively cooperate with different political groups, including reformists, conservatives, and military circles.
The expert emphasizes that this ability made him unique. He often acted as a balancing and restraining force between different centers of power.
According to the analyst, the key issue is not whether there is someone to replace Larijani, but whether there is a figure capable of performing the same functions.
His absence creates a vacuum, especially in terms of coordination and interaction between political forces.
Potential strengthening of conservatives
Vardanyan does not rule out that, under current conditions, conservative and security factions in Iran may strengthen their positions.
She notes that Larijani previously helped balance these forces. Now that counterweight may weaken.
The expert points out that there are already visible trends indicating the growing influence of conservative and security structures.
