A Trump–Putin Deal on the Ukraine issue is becoming a major topic in Armenia. Discussions about such a deal have raised concerns that the United States may allow Russia to return to the South Caucasus. Some political groups in Armenia worry that Russia could be included in the “Peace Crossroads” project without Armenia’s approval. Others fear that the U.S. might even consider an extreme scenario, where Armenia is effectively “handed over” to Russia.
Political analyst Stepan Grigoryan explains the risks behind these concerns.
Impact of a Trump–Putin Deal on Armenia
Grigoryan stresses that a potential Trump–Putin Deal directly affects Armenia’s security and strategic plans. He warns that the close ties between part of Trump’s team and Putin’s team create an unfavorable environment for Armenia. According to him, Russia does not want Armenia to strengthen its cooperation with the United States.
“Many people believe that Russia is simply jealous when Armenia works with the U.S. The real issue is different. Russia does not want us to work with the United States at all. That is the danger,” Grigoryan says. He adds that if Russia joins regional projects, it will do so with a single goal — to obstruct them.
Why the Risks Are Growing
Grigoryan warns that, without a strong and clear position, Armenia may face the worst possible scenarios. He argues that Russia has leverage over Donald Trump and could influence decisions that impact Armenia.
He recalls that Trump’s earlier 28-point plan included a proposal to bring Russia back into the G7. European leaders, especially the German Chancellor, have already rejected this idea. “Armenia should act in the same way and make firm statements,” he notes.
The Role of Armenia in the Peace Crossroads Project
Grigoryan emphasizes that the “Peace Crossroads” initiative is a bilateral Armenia–U.S. project. “There are only two main actors — Armenia and the United States. If Russia attempts to join, Armenia must clearly articulate its position.”
He highlights that it is Armenia that decides who can be involved — whether China, Europe, or another partner.
Conclusion: Why Armenia Must Be Firm
These concerns, according to Grigoryan, show why a Trump–Putin Deal could create serious risks for Armenia. The country must defend its interests with clarity and determination to avoid strategic setbacks.
