The assassination of Larijani — a blow to Iran’s “deep state”

The assassination of Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, has become one of the most severe blows to Tehran. His influence and role were nearly irreplaceable within the country’s state system. This view was expressed by political analyst Alen Gevondyan while commenting on recent developments in Iran.

A key figure in the system

According to Gevondyan, Larijani had been one of the central figures in Iran’s political and administrative system for many years. He noted that Larijani held top government positions, including leading the legislative body, and was directly involved in the security apparatus.

The analyst emphasizes that since the 2000s, Larijani followed a significant political and administrative path. He became a representative of the so-called “deep state,” whose experience and influence are difficult to replace.

The need for power redistribution

According to the expert, Iran’s political and state elite is now facing the need for serious restructuring. Larijani’s полномочия (powers) are unlikely to be transferred to a single individual. It is more probable that they will be distributed among several actors.

The analyst also points out that even before these events, there were issues in governance and communication within Iran. Local political and military actors often had to make independent decisions in response to actions by Israel and the United States.

In this context, the absence of a figure like Larijani could deepen systemic instability, especially in terms of centralized decision-making.

A closed system and uncertainty

Gevondyan stresses that Iran’s political system remains closed, making it difficult to fully assess ongoing processes.

Nevertheless, he notes that some members of the elite are already partially assuming Larijani’s responsibilities, attempting to maintain continuity in governance.

According to the analyst, future developments will largely depend on how quickly and effectively Iran’s elite adapts to the new reality.
