Liquidation of the Minsk Group — a Sign of Capitulation

The liquidation of the Minsk Group complicates the situation and future diplomatic opportunities regarding the restoration of the rights of the people of Artsakh. This was stated by MP from the “Armenia” faction, lawyer Elinar Vardanyan.

She recalled that Azerbaijan’s demand for the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group was one of the preconditions for signing a peace treaty with Armenia. The final decision on this issue is expected in just a few days. According to her, Yerevan’s agreement to call for the dissolution of the Minsk Group is, in a way, an indication of capitulation.

Nevertheless, Vardanyan is confident that although the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group will complicate the possibilities of advancing the issue of Artsakh Armenians’ return to the international arena, it will not completely eliminate them. “If Armenian diplomacy approaches the matter wisely, new formats could be created within which the issue of Artsakh’s return will be discussed and resolved. But this is only possible in the case of a change of power in Armenia, because the current authorities consider the Artsakh issue closed, believe that Artsakh was a burden for Armenia, and that by abandoning it, the country managed to preserve its sovereignty,” the MP argued.

According to her, the current authorities are ready to make any concessions to Baku for the sake of signing a document that has nothing to do with peace. “This document will ensure neither peace nor development; it is only needed by Pashinyan to secure his own reproduction,” Vardanyan emphasized.

She also noted that the upcoming rally on September 2 is intended to demonstrate the Armenian public’s disagreement with attempts to close the Artsakh issue and the restoration of Artsakh Armenians’ rights. “This is a signal that Armenian society does not share Prime Minister Pashinyan’s approaches,” she concluded.
