The internal church crisis is becoming a central topic today. According to political analyst Alen Ghevondyan, the developments are linked not only to domestic issues but also to external geopolitical trends.
Global competition among religious institutions
Ghevondyan notes that the internal church crisis cannot be viewed separately from international politics. He recalled a recent event where the Russian president awarded Archbishop Ezras with a high state honor. This, he said, was also a political message.
At the same time, Western actors send their own signals. They often overlook the actions of Armenian authorities directed against the Armenian Apostolic Church. This dynamic reflects a broader global competition between religious institutions.
The future of the Church and the government’s plans
The analyst predicts that the church community will eventually reach certain solutions. Yet those solutions may not be optimal, and the period of turbulence will likely continue.
According to Ghevondyan, the current prime minister may introduce structural changes in the Church before the end of the year. The goal is to ensure a more controllable spiritual leadership.
“This is politically important for him, and it matters for the geopolitical centers whose interests he represents,” Ghevondyan concluded.
