A Corridor Not De Jure, but De Facto

The road through Syunik, although formally operating within Armenia’s sovereignty, will effectively function as a corridor. This was stated by political analyst Ayk Aivazyan.

According to him, it is already being announced that this road will be part of the international multimodal transport route—the Middle Corridor.

This means that the rules governing this road will stem from the interests of the countries participating in this route, and significant pressure will be exerted on Armenia to ensure this. Ultimately, stronger players will ensure that rules favorable to them are applied on Armenian territory, and in essence, the road will be a corridor. However, to avoid public outcry in Armenia, it will be called the Trump Route, the Road of Peace, or the Road of Independence,” Aivazyan believes.

He is convinced that the Armenian side will neither have the ability nor the de facto right to stop and inspect cargo. Currently, Azerbaijan’s president, emboldened by his success, is openly revealing the details of the actual deal.

International relations expert Suren Sargsyan, in turn, noted that what was signed in Washington was not a treaty but a declaration—a statement, after which the meeting participants also made oral statements. From this perspective, written and oral statements carry equal weight, the expert emphasized. Sargsyan pointed out that the word “corridor” was repeatedly used in Trump’s oral statements, yet Pashinyan raised no objections.

In other words, no matter how much Armenia insists that TRIPP is a road, the general perception is different. Currently, expert and political circles in the U.S. are using precisely this term—corridor,” he stated.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed this issue in parliament the previous day, continuing to insist that, regardless of the terminology used, there is a document that clearly states: TRIPP operates within the framework of Armenia’s sovereignty. He emphasized that the TRIPP project is a matter of discussion between Armenia and the U.S.

Thus, we have agreed with the U.S. that the project will be implemented based on the principles of Armenia’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and inviolability of borders. The U.S. is interested in investing in this project. This is the objective reality; the rest is subjective reality,” he said.
