Will the process of withdrawing the Russian military base begin after the elections?

Political technologist Armen Badalyan commented on what the authorities mean by “transformation” and what developments may be expected in Armenian-Russian relations in the near future.

According to his assessment, by speaking about “transformation,” the authorities are effectively saying that they want to preserve relations with Russia while simultaneously continuing to move toward the West and the European Union.

“Transformation means: yes, we want to maintain good relations with you, but we are going toward the European Union and the West,” Badalyan stated.

A course toward reducing Russian influence

According to the political technologist, policies aimed at reducing and even eliminating Russian influence in Armenia will continue within this framework.

In his opinion, the process will affect both the Russian military base and the presence of Russian border guards.

“The Russian military base and the Russian border service will be withdrawn. It is now possible not only to assume but to say with near certainty that this process will be implemented,” he stated.

Badalyan argues that the beginning of this process has already been laid.

He pointed to remarks made by Prime Minister Pashinyan regarding the high costs associated with the service of Russian border guards.

According to him, the government’s strategic goals have not changed, and the Civil Contract party will attempt to carry them through to completion.

No improvement in relations expected after June

“Therefore, forget about any possible improvement in Armenian-Russian relations after June,” the political technologist concluded.
