Armenia is entering a pre-election period, during which political blocs and alliances are actively forming, and the country’s key players are determining their future strategies and positions. In this context, opposition figure Gor Hovhannisyan announced his return to active political life. A few months ago, he left the “Alliance” party, and recently, he shared on his Facebook page his intention to re-enter the political arena. In an interview with VECTORS, he outlined his immediate plans and strategic vision for the upcoming political cycle.
A Platform for Influence: From Words to Action
Hovhannisyan explained his departure from the “Alliance” party as due to minor disagreements with its leadership, emphasizing that this did not affect his constructive relationships with former colleagues. He noted that he continues to actively engage with various political forces. “My goal is to participate in forming a unified platform that will enable real influence on the country’s processes. I am focused on the strategic consolidation of political forces capable of not just declaring programs but implementing them,” he stated.
Hovhannisyan revealed that several political forces are currently in talks with him. He stressed that a decision on further political cooperation has already been made and will be announced in the coming days. The opposition figure refrained from naming the specific political force, only hinting that it is a pro-Russian entity. According to Hovhannisyan, pursuing a multi-vector foreign policy in the current global environment is practically impossible. “The current global situation demands a clear and consistent stance from the country,” the opposition figure noted. This is why he sees value in cooperating with a pro-Russian political force, which, in his view, can offer more concrete and feasible approaches to the country’s foreign policy strategy.
Removing Pashinyan from Power Is Only Possible by His Own Methods
Hovhannisyan emphasized that the main goal of his increased political involvement is to use all available means to remove the current government. To achieve this, he believes, there must be a consolidation of all “healthy” national forces and the organization of public pressure on the ruling team. “I don’t believe that a change of power in Armenia can be achieved through elections,” he stressed. Hovhannisyan noted that the “I Have Honor” faction’s initiative to propose a vote of no confidence seems unrealistic under current conditions.
“For the procedure to succeed, 18 votes from the ‘Civil Contract’ faction are needed, which is extremely difficult to secure in the current political situation,” he believes. He also expressed skepticism about the Republicans’ claims of having secured agreements with members of this faction, adding that all political forces are currently preparing for elections. “Pashinyan must be removed using his own methods,” the opposition figure explained. According to him, this involves mobilizing large numbers of people on the streets and squares, which would serve as a tool for public pressure on the ruling force. Such mobilization, he believes, would increase the ruling faction’s willingness to engage in dialogue and compromise. Only after garnering mass support can the formal process of initiating a vote of no confidence in the government begin.
What Should the New Authorities Do?
Hovhannisyan stressed that if a new government comes to power, the process of regulating relations with Azerbaijan will have to start from scratch. “All documents signed by Pashinyan—from the Trilateral Statement of November 9, 2020, to the Trilateral Declaration of August 8, 2025—must be annulled,” he declared. According to him, it is currently difficult to assess what other verbal commitments the current government has made on the international stage, but given the existing realities, everything will need to be restarted. “This is my personal viewpoint. Naturally, much will depend on who replaces Pashinyan and what the composition of the new government will be,” he concluded.
