The situation around Iran is “stagnant”: what to expect next

Developments around Iran are currently showing no significant progress and are effectively in a “stagnant” phase. This was stated by Iran expert Vardan Voskanyan while commenting on recent regional dynamics.

According to him, despite ongoing harsh and mutual statements from Tehran and Washington, there are still no visible new developments at the level of practical politics.

Voskanyan notes that various information leaks provide some insight into the negotiations that took place in Islamabad between the parties.

According to these reports, the main disagreement concerns the timelines related to Iran’s nuclear program. Iran has expressed readiness to suspend uranium enrichment for five years, while the United States insists on a much longer restriction period of up to twenty years.

The expert also points out that Iran refused to transfer its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% to any third country.

At the same time, Tehran signaled willingness to reduce the level of enrichment, but this proposal did not satisfy the American side, further deepening the disagreements.

Voskanyan adds that the issue of the Strait of Hormuz was also discussed during the negotiations.

He suggests that the United States may have proposed a form of joint management of the strait, but Iran rejected this approach, emphasizing that it considers the area part of its strategic sphere of interest.

In conclusion, Voskanyan states that the process is currently at a deadlock: both sides maintain rigid positions, and the foundations for compromise have not yet been established.
