In the developments surrounding Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, he has effectively found himself in a more favorable position than in other comparable cases. This view was expressed by international relations expert Suren Sargsyan.
According to the expert, Maduro could have faced a scenario similar to the one that once befell Muammar Gaddafi or Saddam Hussein. However, such a development has not materialized in this case, and the situation has evolved along a markedly different trajectory.
As Sargsyan explains, Maduro is expected to appear before a U.S. court, while benefiting from the full range of procedural rights enshrined in the American legal system and guaranteed to any defendant. Importantly, the proceedings will take place in the state of New York, where the death penalty is prohibited by law. Moreover, based on the charges that have been brought forward, the application of capital punishment is not envisaged in this case at all.
The expert also draws attention to the fact that Maduro is covered by both international and national guarantees designed to protect the right to life and human dignity. He cannot be subjected to torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment. In addition, the entire judicial process will remain under close public scrutiny, which, in Sargsyan’s view, constitutes an additional and meaningful protective mechanism in itself.
Sargsyan further emphasizes the institutional independence of the judiciary, noting that in this particular case political or other forms of pressure on the presiding judge are, in practical terms, virtually excluded. In this context, he argues, Maduro’s situation differs sharply from the fate of individuals who end up imprisoned in other countries without effective legal safeguards or credible mechanisms of judicial protection.
In conclusion, the international relations expert notes that it remains difficult to determine with certainty whether the current developments are the result of previously reached arrangements or merely a favorable coincidence of circumstances. Nevertheless, it is clear that under the present conditions, Nicolás Maduro finds himself operating within a significantly more protected legal environment.
