The “Great Turan,” backed by global powers, is turning into a weapon in the Islamic world’s internal struggle — a danger not just to Armenia, but to the whole region. This opinion was expressed by historian and former MP Vardan Khachatryan.
The great powers are promoting this process to pit Turkic-speaking Islam against Arabic-speaking Islam — thereby weakening China and India, and ultimately bringing the Islamic world under their control,” the historian noted.
According to him, the “Great Turan” project is directly linked to Armenia’s Syunik province, which Azerbaijan and Turkey persistently refer to as the Zangezur Corridor. He directly quoted Turkish President Erdoğan’s statement: “The Zangezur Corridor will connect the Turkic worlds with one another.”
Khachatryan warned that this project could be realized only if Armenia ceased to exist as a state. He urged people not to be deceived into thinking that Ankara and Baku would be satisfied with Syunik alone.
“If we are talking about the Great Turan, you can roughly imagine the scale of this phenomenon and its ambitions. Very soon they will claim that the current capacity is insufficient and will seek further expansion,” he explained.
According to the historian, the so-called Zangezur Corridor is merely the first stage. Once obtained, it will be followed by the gradual dismantling of Armenia — a territory they need to operate without obstacles. Armenia, as a state, must not stand in their way.
The ultimate goal, he said, is to turn the Great Turan against the Arab world in order to eliminate what they perceive as the Islamic threat.
“In other words, when Turkic Islam and Arab Islam come face to face, the great powers will consider their mission accomplished,” Khachatryan emphasized.
He added: “Understanding all this, every time Iran’s situation edges closer to war, Saudi Arabia becomes immediately alarmed, since it represents Arab Islam and is the guardian of the holy cities. From this perspective, it has finally realized that losing Iran is not an option. Yes, Shiites and Sunnis may have their differences, but if the Great Turan is truly being created, its ultimate direction will be a confrontation with Arabic-speaking Islam.
