High-level EU visits and summits sent a clear pre-election message

The European Political Community summit and high-level Armenia–EU meetings held in Yerevan just one month before the elections carried clear political messages. This opinion was expressed by political analyst Tigran Grigoryan.

According to him, Armenia has never organized events of such scale in its history.

“The only comparable example was the Francophonie summit, but the level of international attention at that time was much lower. This time the situation was completely different. Essentially, the leaders of almost all major European countries were in Armenia,” he stated.

In Grigoryan’s assessment, the successful organization of such a large-scale event is already a positive development for Armenia.

One month before elections — clear political signals

Grigoryan draws particular attention to the timing. In his view, it is difficult to consider events of this scale held just one month before elections as purely technical or accidental.

The political analyst also focused on the substance of the Armenia–European Union summit. According to him, the meeting did not actually produce new processes or new agreements.

He noted that even the final statement contains no mention of a new agenda or fresh arrangements. The document mainly summarizes already known and ongoing processes.

According to Grigoryan, the very fact that the Armenia–EU summit was held, together with references to existing processes, should be viewed within the same domestic political context.

Macron’s visit and the Gyumri events followed the same logic

Grigoryan also believes that the French president’s state visit during the pre-election period, as well as the events organized in Gyumri, including warm interactions with Prime Minister Pashinyan, should be interpreted within the same political framework.

The political analyst also pointed to another detail. Although the strategic partnership document with France had been planned for signing for a long time and discussed at various levels, it was signed precisely on the eve of the elections.

In his assessment, this was also a signal of support.

Growing EU interest and Armenia’s regional role

At the same time, Grigoryan noted a second factor — the European Union’s growing interest in Armenia.

According to him, Armenia has become the EU’s most important and almost the only partner in the South Caucasus willing to deepen relations with Brussels.

Developments in Georgia, he believes, directly influenced these processes, while Azerbaijan has shown limited interest in deeper political cooperation.

Grigoryan stressed that Armenia’s importance in Brussels has increased significantly. In his words, this summit also reflects that change, as Armenia is now firmly on the EU agenda.

At present, he said, Armenia is viewed as “one of the EU’s last strongholds” in the region.
