Pashinyan Is Turning Opposition Votes into an Argument Against Armenia

Following the parliamentary elections, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the more than half a million citizens who voted for opposition forces represent a legitimate source of concern for Azerbaijan and international actors.
According to this logic, more than half a million people in Armenia allegedly support the restoration of the Karabakh movement, “Greater Armenia” concepts, and other revanchist ideas.

Political commentator Hakob Badalyan argues that such an interpretation fundamentally distorts the political reality.

The Opposition Did Not Campaign on Revanchism

According to Badalyan, opposition parties did not present a revanchist agenda to voters.

On the contrary, he argues that some opposition groups even lost part of their more radical electorate because they openly stated that they would proceed from existing realities and remain committed to Armenia’s international obligations.

For that reason, he believes accusations of revanchism are unfounded.

The Main Issue Is the Consequence of Such Claims

Badalyan argues that the problem is not merely the distortion itself but the consequences that may follow.

In his view, portraying hundreds of thousands of Armenian citizens as revanchists provides Azerbaijan and supportive international actors with additional arguments that can be used against Armenia.

He believes such narratives may later be invoked to justify stronger political pressure or other actions directed at the country.

External Actors Want Rapid Progress

According to the commentator, many international actors are interested in rapidly implementing geopolitical arrangements in the South Caucasus.

He views the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process as one of the central elements of that strategy.

In his opinion, there is considerable pressure to accelerate negotiations, which in practice often means encouraging Armenia to accept Azerbaijani demands as quickly as possible.

Azerbaijan Continues to Pursue Broader Objectives

Badalyan argues that Azerbaijan maintains both tactical and strategic objectives regarding Armenia.

These objectives extend beyond current negotiations and include broader questions related to security, territorial issues, and regional communications.

He believes that presenting a large segment of Armenian society as revanchist strengthens Azerbaijan’s position in such discussions.

The Risk Is the Legitimation of Pressure

According to Badalyan, the most dangerous aspect of these statements is that they may help legitimize additional external pressure on Armenia.

He considers this a more serious issue than the political distortion itself.

At the same time, he warns that such rhetoric may deepen domestic polarization and social intolerance, further weakening the state.

Concerns About Future Escalation Remain

The political commentator also recalls statements made during the election campaign suggesting that the absence of a constitutional majority could increase the risk of conflict.

In his view, such rhetoric naturally raises concerns, particularly given the crises that occurred in September 2020, 2022, and 2023.

He argues that society has legitimate reasons to carefully examine the implications of such statements.

Opposition Voters Should Be Seen as a National Resource

In conclusion, Badalyan stresses that the more than half a million citizens who voted for opposition parties should not be transformed into an argument against Armenia.

Instead, he believes that society and opposition forces should approach the situation calmly, avoid emotional reactions, and seek ways to turn this substantial electoral base into an argument in favor of Armenian statehood and a dignified peace.
