Chain Escalation Risks Are Growing in the Middle East

Renewed military tensions in the Middle East have raised fresh concerns about regional and global security. Former Armenian Deputy Defense Minister Artak Zakaryan believes the current developments could trigger a broader escalation across the region.

A Ceasefire Does Not Guarantee Stability

Commenting on recent US strikes against military facilities in Iran and the subsequent statements from both sides, Zakaryan said he had expected such a scenario.

According to him, neither the US-Iran memorandum nor the announced 60-day ceasefire guarantees lasting peace.

He argues that the United States is unlikely to abandon its long-term strategic objectives in the Middle East.

Zakaryan also believes the interests of the United States, Israel, and several Gulf states currently overlap.

Iran Is Unlikely to Retreat

The former deputy defense minister says Iran is unlikely to compromise on what it considers its core national interests.

At the same time, Israel continues to push for stronger measures against Iran’s nuclear program, further increasing regional tensions.

In his view, current diplomatic efforts are taking place under the constant risk of renewed military confrontation.

A Wider Conflict Cannot Be Ruled Out

Zakaryan urges observers to assess developments within a broader geopolitical context.

He points to the continuing confrontation between Russia and NATO in Europe and argues that multiple security crises are becoming increasingly interconnected.

According to him, the Middle East conflict could trigger a chain reaction leading to wider regional instability.

He notes that only a few years ago, few expected either the complete displacement of Armenians from Artsakh or the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war.

Armenia Faces Difficult Security Questions

Zakaryan believes Armenia must consider who would guarantee its security and neutrality if regional tensions continue to escalate.

He also notes that large Armenian communities live across the Middle East, making developments in the region particularly important for Armenia.
